Lyrics & Translation:

Lost in the town at night walking aimlessly in depravity
Where did you come from? You don’t look all too great
Hey why don’t you come to my place, I’ll warm you up

It must have been hard for you getting this far
Why don’t you rest here for a while?
We can have a nice conversation to pass the time

For the time being you can feel at ease
The snow has covered the tracks we left
Your voice sounds like it hurts you to speak
Your throat is parched, your throat is parched

A fox far away is barking in the night
He appears to be searching for us
We reduce our voices to a whisper
Let’s keep on like this, keep on like this

In the midst of the freezing snow
You had within you with a certain warmth
Heating up your voice as you breathed the air
It flared and flared, that cleansing flame

Now cross over the fence of fate
I want to get to know you more
But I know I can’t just tell you straight
Before we knew it the snow was rain

Early in the morning before the sunrise
You got up and left this place behind
Even though you had cried all those tears
They overflowed, they overflowed

“Thank you for all you’ve done for me”
Don’t say such a thing, don’t leave me behind
There’s surely nowhere for you to go home to
Not in this state, not in this state

Even if I were to someday meet you in a dream
There’s no way I could ever reach you
I’ll just remain here, remain here
Crying into my sleeves awaiting your return

Now beyond the climax of the banquet
It’s high time we’ve tried to live our lives
The cleansing flame, the cleansing flame
had been wet by rain, wet by rain

The sky now clear, night breaks into dawn
I wonder if you are seeing it too

Notes

I translated 禊の火 as “cleansing flame”. 禊 generally refers to the ritual of cleansing oneself of one’s impurities or infamy. One theory states that it may have originated from 身注ぐ (mi-sosogu; lit. pour over one’s body), as some 禊 rituals are performed with water. It has been repurposed in other contexts that do not necessarily involve water, however, such as when a politician wins over the voters in an election after recovering from a scandal. 穢れ (kegare; impurity, defilement, depravity) is a related concept. It’s the thing you cleanse yourself of.

etymology of 禊

My friend pointed out to me that ハレハレヤ might be word-play on ハレルヤ (hareruya; hallelujah) and 晴れ晴れ (harehare; a repetition of the morpheme hare, which means "clear" in the sense of "clear skies" or "to clear up"). In the last verse, the song says 晴れた晴れた朝ぼらけ (hareta hareta asaborake), which I believe is where the inspiration for the title comes from.

A New Paradigm for Programming Languages

Programming these days has become a matter of learning a spectrum of different languages that all run on different runtime systems and all do their jobs slightly differently. Some programming languages, like C++ and Rust, run directly on "the metal", some, like Java and Elixir, run on a virtual machine, and others, such as Python and JavaScript, are run by an interpreter. Oftentimes the runtime environments of these languages greatly influence their design philosophies, and hence the way code is written for them, yet they often need to accomplish the same sorts of tasks. For example, to create a web server, each language has its own host of web sever frameworks to offer, each with its own quirks. It is rare for the same framework to have been targeted for multiple languages and function exactly the same in all of them. This generally isn't a problem when one chooses to develop in a single language, however many projects in the professional world tend to span multiple lang...
